Just over three years ago, LSU-Alexandria baseball player Brandon Goyne collapsed during a game and passed away from sudden cardiac arrest. His family later learned Goyne had an undiagnosed heart condition. There are ways to prevent what happened to Brandon from happening to someone else and Captain Shreve is taking those measures.
The Gators partnered up with the Brandon Goyne foundation to provide every Shreve athlete with an EKG test for only fifteen dollars. Brandon’s mother Debbie Goyne said she believes Shreve is the first school in the state of Louisiana to implement an EKG as part of their physicals. Their goal at the Brandon Goyne foundation is to offer the test to all high school athletes. Captain Shreve head football coach Bryant Sepulvado stressed that the peace of mind is invaluable.
“Safety is always our first and foremost priority with kids. If you catch one kid that hasn’t been diagnosed and save a life, it makes everything worthwhile,” said Sepulvado.
“0.5% of the time there is something definitely wrong and definitely quit participation and have it checked. As a parent, I wish I have the opportunity to have my child get checked to know that there is something,” added Debbie Goyne.
Brandon Goyne had seven physicals in nine years as a student-athlete, but those tests never caught his heart condition. An EKG could have saved his life.
