McCalla leaves behind a legacy of 55 years in education, including 49 years in Caddo Schools and six years at Northwestern State University. She announced her intentions to retire in June, but agreed to stay at the helm of the campus while the district worked with the community to name the next principal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">\u201cI am extremely honored and grateful for the opportunity to continue Dr. McCalla\u2019s legacy of excellence,\u201d Gustavson said. \u201cShe has built a tradition of high expectations and put powerful practices into place which we will use as we push forward for continued success.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Gustavson is a veteran of Caddo Parish Public Schools with 22 years of experience in the district. She began her career much like Dr. McCalla as a math teacher before pursuing opportunities as a high school counselor and most recently as the district\u2019s Secondary Math Curriculum Specialist and leader of the district\u2019s accreditation process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">\u201cShe will bring impressive professional and personal resources to our school and community,\u201d said Dr. McCalla. \u201cI am excited for our program.\u00a0 Her tenure in schools in Caddo Parish is marked with her dedication to improving the development and well-being of students and teachers while being sensitive to the need supportive of community involvement in the school.\u00a0 I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with her through a transition period.\u00a0 Through my long tenure it Captain Shreve High School, I have enjoyed such strong support from our many stakeholders.\u00a0 I know that will continue in Mrs. Gustavson\u2019s tenure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Goree said he was impressed immensely with Gustavson\u2019s vision for the future of Captain Shreve. Her entry plan includes extensive engagement with parents, students, faculty and community organizations while pushing for academic success for all students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">\u201cMrs. Gustavson is an amazing educator with a comprehensive understanding of Captain Shreve and its needs,\u201d Goree said. \u201cI have no doubt she will do a wonderful job. I thank Dr. McCalla and the Shreve community for their patience as we worked to find who we believe will best serve Captain Shreve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Born to a family of educators, Gustavson said her lifelong goal has been to create and expand possibilities for students to advance themselves. She will now work alongside McCalla as part of the leadership transition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">\u201cCaptain Shreve is truly a family atmosphere with a spirit of excellence and tradition,\u201d Gustavson said. \u201cI have a heart for students and teachers and being in that setting is the most fulfilling and rewarding calling.
