{"id":1429,"date":"2021-03-07T09:46:40","date_gmt":"2021-03-07T15:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblog.captainshreve.com\/?p=1429"},"modified":"2021-03-23T09:49:29","modified_gmt":"2021-03-23T14:49:29","slug":"times-captain-shreve-tops-benton-in-battle-of-nw-la-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblog.captainshreve.com\/?p=1429","title":{"rendered":"Times \u2013 Captain Shreve tops Benton in battle of NW La. teams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">HAMMOND \u2013 In a classic battle of District 1-5A foes, Captain Shreve captured its second LHSAA Class 5A state championship in three years Saturday night in Southeastern Louisiana\u2019s University as the last of 12 title tilts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Captain Shreve (21-5) defeated Benton (17-7) won 50-39 in a game that probably should have been played in Bossier City\u2019s Brookshire Grocery Arena.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Lady Gators asserted themselves late in the third quarter behind Kyra Stokes and Kiayra Ellis, expanding to a 15-point lead to keep the Lady Tigers from repeating as state champs. Ellis, an Arkansas State signee, was selected the game\u2019s MVP after posting a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2021\/03\/07\/PSHR\/98d17442-a60b-4041-b43e-4f3914a3eb36-Shreve_1.jpg?w=625&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Benton and Captain Shreve battled for the LHSAA Class 5A state title Saturday night in Hammond.\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_img_ccw gnt_em_img_ccw__cap gnt_em_img_ccw__crd\" data-c-caption=\"Benton and Captain Shreve battled for the LHSAA Class 5A state title Saturday night in Hammond.\" data-c-credit=\"Submitted Photo\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Shreve\u2019s Jordan McLemore and Benton\u2019s Anna Robins were selected the Horizon Award winners from their schools for their commitment to community and scholastics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Lady Gators used their superior length to hold Benton\u2019s Jada Anderson to just 11 points on a 4-of-16 shooting night before she moves on to ULM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Although players on both sides are familiar with each other and the school\u2019s principals have long ties, the game was a battle of the fittest from the opening tip.
