14-year-old Erin Jackson put herself in Gigi Bryant’s teammate’s shoes. Not one, but three girls on the team, including Gigi, lost their lives in a helicopter crash Sunday. They were on their way to a game with Gigi’s father, retired basketball star Kobe Bryant.
Jackson said the girls on Captain Shreve’s basketball team are her best friends.

Anyone who thinks playing soccer at the high school level isn’t back-breaking work, should consider a one-on-one with Captain Shreve’s William Bradford.
The senior standout is just a few months removed from a nine-month forced hiatus from the sport he loves due to overplaying kicking a small white ball around on turf and grass fields.
Bradford suffered a stress fracture in his lower back last January that required surgery in June.
“It started hurting after a practice, but went away, and I didn’t think anything of it,” Bradford said. “We had a tournament in Lafayette the following weekend, and after the first game, the pain just never went away. I had to miss the last game of the tournament.”
Bradford realized he was playing too much soccer without enough rest between outings, causing him to slip a disc. He was constantly in pain before the surgery.

During the recruiting process of Captain Shreve’s Kendal Coleman, one college coach described the big man’s upside as in the vicinity of Louisiana Tech/NBA great Karl Malone.
An exaggeration? Maybe. Maybe not.
But what we do know is that Coleman is ultra-talented, smart, physical and will make Northwestern State fans happy in the near future. Right now, the 6-foot-8, 220-pounder is putting smiles on the faces of the Gator faithful.
“What is most impressive about Kendal is his work ethic and willingness to be coached,” first year Captain Shreve coach Corey Deans said. “When your best player is your hardest worker and the most coachable, it makes the coach’s job easy. Not only does Kendal hold himself to my expectations and standards, but he demands his teammates meet them also.”

Captain Shreve sauntered into the Parkway gym Saturday afternoon and sauntered away with their first tournament championship and perhaps their most significant victory under new coach Corey Deans.
While the celebration of the 50-39 victory over the host Panthers in the championship game of the 2019 Barksdale Federal Credit Union basketball tournament was somewhat muted, it may have set the Gators up for a strong run when the District 1-5A race gets under way.
“It doesn’t mean a whole lot, except it is nice to get a win against a district opponent,” Deans said. “I’m ready for district play to get underway.”

Four Captain Shreve High School educators are preparing to head to Baltimore on Nov. 21-24 to lead a series of roundtable discussions at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) annual conference.
Library media specialist Maureen Barclay and teachers Amy Douglas, Sarah Hamm and Dottie Reeser have been selected to share the foundational research that guided their inquiry and reflective practice as part of Captain Shreve’s work with the National Writing Project (NWP). Team members will highlight collaboration with local NWP branches and school administrators. The session is titled, “Collaboration to Build an Interdisciplinary Writing Community.”
Attendees will learn strategies to garner administrative and community support in developing an interdisciplinary community of writers. The team will share opportunities to write for authentic purposes and audiences across content areas.
“Since I began my career as a teacher, I have benefited from the research, practices, speakers and information provided by NCTE and NWP,” Barclay said. “I am excited to give back to the national conversation and to use this opportunity to continue to improve how we are providing instruction for students.”

Northwestern State basketball coach Mike McConathy was looking for a throwback post player who doesn’t mind scrapping in the paint, and he believes he’s found that in Captain Shreve High’s Kendal Coleman.
Coleman signed with NSU on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward/center averaged 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks as a junior.
“We are very excited to add a player with the skill, drive and potential of Kendal Coleman,” McConathy said. “He will come to us after playing for several of the best coaches in our state (at Captain Shreve and for the Louisiana Roundballers).

Caddo Parish Public Schools has announced Captain Shreve High School Principal Ginger Gustavson has been named the 2020 Louisiana Association of School Executives Regional Principal of the Year.
Gustavson, who has served as the principal of Captain Shreve since 2015, has garnered a reputation of excellence with continued increases in the school’s graduation rate, student performance and parental involvement.
Under Gustavson’s guidance, Captain Shreve also earned recognition as a National PTA School of Excellence and consistent accolades for student leadership advocacy. The school also is home to a 2020 National Merit Semi-Finalist.
Every time the month enveloping Halloween rolls around, Li’Quesni October walks around the Captain Shreve campus with a smile on his face.
It’s his favorite month for obvious reasons. He likes most of the other ones too, but his friends have to love October in October.
“Indeed,” he said on Wednesday afternoon.
One of the best strong safeties in the area and one who is getting looks to play at the next level, October rarely gets beat on the football field. That’s because he has near world class speed and has an after-burner that kicks in when an opponent tries to go deep.
“I’ve got good recovery speed, and I like to play aggressively physical,” October said of his defensive assets. “I love hitting. I love bringing the contact more than receiving it.”

In one of the most spectacular finishes yet in The Times Athlete of the Week voting, sponsored by the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, Captain Shreve cross country standout Alex Adcock topped North DeSoto cross country runner Courtney Johnson for the honor.
Adcock garnered 37.58 percent of the 75,869 votes cast, the most in the two-year history of the award, to eek out win versus Johnson, who managed 35.94 percent of the positive votes. The final numbers were 28,510 votes to 27,265. The previous week, 27,295 total votes were cast for the eight candidates.
